Increased compensation for road accident victims

The National Council for Road Safety has taken measures to increase compensation to be paid in case of death of a person in hit and run accidents to Rs.250,000 from Rs. 200,000 on the instructions of Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

Compensation has also been increased in case such an accident causes “grievous hurt” caused to the victims, up to Rs.150,000 from Rs.100,000 at present. “As per the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, compensation has been increased for death and serious injuries to victims of hit and run accidents,” Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said. The Transport Ministry has come up with a draft Scheme for Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Accidents, 2021.

This was revealed during the ceremony organized by the National Council for Road Safety to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) at the Kottawa Multimode Transport Centre in Makumbura yesterday.

The Transport Minister provided financial assistance to the several persons who have contributed voluntarily to save the lives of people from the road accidents and minimizing the road accidents.
