JICA distributes Rs. 400 mn worth hospital equipment

Aiming to further strengthen the health service in the country under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assistance project, hospital equipment worth Rs.400 million was distributed to nine hospitals in the country at the Ministry of Health on Wednesday (19).

Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mizukoshi Hideaki officially handed over the equipment to Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. Under this, equipments will be provided to Teldeniya, Warakapola, Welikanda, Pimbura, Karawanella, Avissawella, Nawalapitiya, Hingurakgoda base hospitals as well as Hambantota District General Hospital.

The Government of Japan as well as JICA have been supporting the Sri Lankan healthcare system for a long time and have launched a number of projects to develop the hospital system in Sri Lanka.

Minister Rambukwella expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan and the people of Japan for their generosity over a long period of time and said that Japan had extended its support to Sri Lanka under various Heads of State and Governments.

Ambassador Mizukoshi Hideaki said Japan and Sri Lanka have been close friends for over 70 years and have been able to implement a number of projects, especially with the assistance of the JICA for healthcare.

He further said that the JICA has provided extensive assistance to Sri Lanka for a number of services such as vaccination and PCR laboratory services upgrades during the pandemic.

Secretary to the Ministry of Health Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Additional Secretary Dr. Sunil Alwis, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena and Senior Representative of the JICA Project in Sri Lanka Takashima Kiyofumi also participated.
