No witchhunt on any arrested official, only Court action - Minister

The Leader of the House, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena denied the Opposition Leader’s claim that the government is purposefully jeopardizing the lives of officers arrested.

Gunawardena pointed out that neither the government nor the President is seeking revenge against anyone. However, action before the Courts against the said persons would continue.

The Leader of the House, Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardena made these observations in response to a question raised by the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament yesterday (23).

The Opposition Leader noted that the life of the former CID Director Shani Abeysekara is in danger and the government is purposefully neglecting his protection.

In reply, the Leader of the House observed, “The Leader of the Opposition mentioned about the life of the former CID Chief Shani Abeysekara. We assure that the government will not allow any harm be done to those who have been arrested or who have been arrested on suspicion. We must emphasize this fact. Shani Abeysekera has been charged and is being investigated. There are several issues before the Courts regarding those investigations also. We reject the claim that there is a plan to destroy anyone’s life.”

Minister Gunawardena said: “I want to remind you of former DIG Anura Senanayake who was arrested during the previous regime. His life was systematically ruined and he eventually died due to the difficulties created. That is what happened to a senior police officer who was arrested during your time. However, we as a government do not seek revenge on anyone. However, the proceedings before the Courts will continue. ”
