CIS crisis could impact Lankan exports

Over 90,000 tourist arrivals in February

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could have impacts on the Sri Lankan exports, mainly tea exports.

“10.2 per cent of total tea exports are directed to this region. Apart from that, we do see some imports from this region especially wheat from Ukraine,” said Central Bank of Sri Lanka Director of Economic Research Anil Perera.

He said further that tourist arrivals continue to increase and in February this year, Sri Lanka has seen good numbers in terms of tourist arrivals closer to 97,000.

In the first two months of this year, Sri Lanka has recorded closer to 179,000 tourist arrivals.

“This geopolitical tensions could have some impact, but we think as our tourism destinations are somewhat diversified and impact from ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe will not be that high,” Perera said.
