Twenty teams vie for Sports Minister’s Cup

Twenty teams from eight academies will be in the fray at the Fifth Anniversary of the Barcelona Football Academy Soccer Tournament played for the Sports Minister’s Challenge Cup at the Race Course grounds today where the matches are scheduled to kick-off from 8.30 a.m. onwards.

Overseas School of Colombo, Frazer Football Academy, Kickers Football Academy, Belvoir College International, First Touch Football Academy, Colombo International School, Wattala Football Academy and hosts Barcelona FC will play in two segments. They will field eighteen teams in the Boy’s and two teams from the lasses will tussle it out in this year’s competition. This tourney which is an iconic one conducted among the academies in the country will attract boys from under-12, 14, 16, and 18 age categories while the girls will dribble it out in the under-14 age group. The organizers anticipate promoting the game of football among the young boys and girls who are unable to dribble the ball in schools while developing the skills of other players.

The eight teams are segregated into two groups and the respective leaders will march through to the final while the runner-up teams will play for the third and fourth places.

The winners will carry away the Sports Minister’s Challenge Cup and the players will receive individual replicas along with medals while the runner-up team players too will individual replicas along with medals.

Shiranthi Rajapaksa wife of the Prime Minister will grace the occasion as chief guest and give away the awards.
