Inquiry against dealer who sold gas at higher price

The sales agent of the Hatton Kotagala area who sold a 12.5 kg domestic gas cylinder of Litro to consumers for Rs. 4,500 has been suspended from yesterday (25) pending an inquiry.

General Manager in charge of the Litro Company’s Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces Saranga Wijesinghe said the sales agent had been suspended temporarily following the commencement of an investigation into the matter.

He added that display of prices has been made mandatory at all outlets. The company had handed over 100, 12.5 kg domestic gas cylinders to the Kotagala dealer on March 24. The Kotagala town trade association had lodged a complaint alleging that he was selling the cylinders to consumers for Rs.4,500.00 each. When asked why gas is being sold at a higher price, the sales agent had told consumers that he had to sell it at a higher price because he had bought gas at a higher price.

Residents of the area blocked the Hatton - Nuwara Eliya main road in front of the Kotagala Litro Gas dealership building in protest.

Dimbula Pathana Police intervened and re-opened the shop after the dealer took steps to close it.

The dealer had later arranged for gas cylinders to be delivered at the company’s approved price.
