The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) noted that given the scale of the economic challenges and the demands of the public an interim solution led by qualified professionals should be sought. The OPA stressed the importance of having subject matter experts assigned to areas currently facing a severe crisis.
These views were expressed by OPA President Dulith Perera on April 7 at the OPA premises. The OPA called on all parties to come together to face the national crisis and not seek short term political benefit.
Perera noted that it would be wise for certain national list MPs to step down and for ‘Subject Matter Experts’ to take their place to give them the freedom to make decisions. Perera noted that political changes in the current context were difficult given the constitutional framework and the need for time to call elections. He said, “as a nation, we can’t wait that long. It needs to be handled immediately.”
The OPA called on the government to deal with multilateral financial institutions to restructure the debt of the company.
They noted that bilateral borrowings should also be restructured. Perera criticized previous national list appointments by all parties as not being utilized to bring suitable expertise into the parliamentary system.
