Siyambalapitiya resigns again

Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has decided to step down from his position one day after being re-elected to the position.

According to his Media Secretary Pathum Pasqual, Siyambalapitiya had already sent his resignation letter to the President.

“The Deputy Speaker has made this decision after considering the repeated requests from the public”, Pasqual said.

Siyambalapitiya was elected uncontested to the post of Deputy Speaker on August 20, 2020 and he decided to step down from his position from April 30, with his Party - the SLFP deciding to defect from the government. Siyambalapitiya was re-elected to the post at a crucial vote with 148 votes in favour with the support of Government Parliamentarians on Thursday. The SJB backed candidate - Imitiaz Bakeer Markar managed to garner only 65 votes.

SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera said that his Party had arrived at an agreement with the main Opposition party to field Siyambalapitiya for the Deputy Speaker’s fray.
