MAHINDA RESIGNS AS PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from the post yesterday.

The Prime Minister said that he tendered his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday evening. “Effective immediately, I have tendered my resignation as Prime Minister to the President,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

A number of Government Parliamentarians who became independent in Parliament demanded that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa must step down paving the way for an interim caretaker government that, in turn,  must expedite negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and pass a 21st Amendment to the Constitution to be followed by an election.

Rajapaksa became Sri Lanka’s youngest ever Member of Parliament when he was elected to the seat that his father D.A. Rajapaksa had vacated.

He became the fourth Executive President of the country by winning the 2005 Presidential election. He won the 2010 Presidential election too.
