Mahanayake Theras condemn brutal attack on peaceful protestors

The Mahanayake Theras of the three Chapters condemned the brutal attack on the peaceful protestors in Colombo by a group of individuals with vested political interests

They stated this by issuing a joint statement to the President, the former Prime Minister,  the Opposition Leader and all Parliamentarians following the mob attack that took place opposite the Temple Trees and the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo yesterday.

The statement has been signed by Mahanayake of the Malwatta Chapter Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, Mahanayake of the Amarapura Chapter Most Venerable Dodampahala Chandrasiri Thera and Mahanayake of the Ramagnna Chapter Most Venerable Makulewe Wimala Thera.

The Mahanayake Theras said the brutal attack on peaceful protestors who were demanding solutions to the present social, political and economic crisis in the country is a disgrace on democracy and also humanity.

“We believe that the politicians who are behind this attack providing direct and indirect support have no ethical right to hold the positions as the representatives of the people who represent the people’s sovereignty.”

“The Head of State is bound by the Constitution to protect the lives and the properties of the public and to ensure the right to speech of the general public. The Sri Lanka Police and the other authorities should act to enforce the law against those who are responsible for these attacks. Also we remind that these are consequences of the failure to implement the resolutions presented by various parties including us for this crisis immediately”.

“We also request all the responsible parties and the citizens of the county to act wisely and patiently at this decisive juncture and contribute to solve this crisis,” the statement further added.
