IGP orders CID probe into Monday mayhem

AG says unlawful interference, physical assault

The IGP has handed over the investigations into the attack on peaceful protesters at protest sites opposite Temple Trees and the Presidential Secretariat to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, PC has yesterday advised the Inspector General of Police to conduct a fully fledged investigation into the incidents of unlawful interference into people’s constitutional rights, the circumstances that led to them and the consequent commission of penal offences in the process.

Issuing a letter to the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General further stated that the incident in metropolitan Colombo triggered sporadic acts of violence of serious nature involving people and their property all over the country.

He advised the IGP further to investigate the aftermath of the incident on May 9.

He also urged the IGP to complete the investigations urgently on a priority basis.

“The peaceful assemblies of protest were interfered by a large group of people in breach of the Constitution of Sri Lanka and the Penal laws of the land as could be seen from the incidents that occurred in Colombo on May 9”, the Attorney General further mentioned.

He also pointed out that the unlawful interference was seen to have been carried out in the form of physical assault of serious nature causing bodily injury to those who engaged in the exercise of their constitutional freedoms.
