Former PM taken to Trinco Navy base for security - Defence Secretary

Defence Secretary General (Rtd) Kamal Gunaratne confirmed yesterday that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was escorted to the Trincomalee Naval Base for his security.

Speaking at a media briefing with the Army Commander General Shavendra Silva, Gunaratne said it is their duty to protect the lives of every citizen including the former Prime Minister.

“On the day of the incident, thousands of protesters surrounded Temple Trees and started behaving in an unruly manner and setting fire. Hence, we realized that it was unsafe for him to remain there and we took the decision to move the Prime Minister to the Trincomalee Naval Base. But this is not forever. Once the country returns to normal, the former Prime Minister can relocate to a place of his choice.”
