230 arrested over recent violent incidents

Arrests based on 707 Police complaints received
77 Houses of former ministers and MPs burnt

Police have arrested 230 individuals so far in connection with the violent activities reported from across the country following the mob attack on the peaceful protestors in Kollupitiya and Galle Face on May 9, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said yesterday.

“They have been arrested based on 707 already received complaints and the Police are receiving more complaints on the same,” he said.

Of those arrested, 71 are from the Western Province, 47 are from the North Central Province, 43 are from the Southern Province, 36 are from the North Western Province, 17 from the Central Province, 13 from the Sabaragamuwa Province, two from the Uva Province and one from the Northern Province.

“A total of 68 suspects have already been remanded by the Courts and the others were to be produced before the Courts yesterday,” SSP Thalduwa said.

These suspects will be produced before Courts on the charges of homicide, curfew violation, causing injury, assault, unlawful assembly and unlawful entry.

The spokesman also requested the public to contact Hotlines 1997 or 118 and the e-mail ‘[email protected]’ to provide more details about these violent activities.

He said the Police Headquarters have instructed all Police stations islandwide to increase the number of mobile patrols with a maximum number of officers in order to ensure law and order in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, the Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer were assassinated during a clash at Nittambuwa on May 9. The Parliamentarian’s residence and the vehicle were also destroyed by the attackers.

According to the Police Media Spokesman, the Criminal Investigation Department is conducting investigations into the attacks on the peaceful protestors as well. These investigations are being carried out under the direct supervision of the Attorney General.

“The officers have recorded evidence from nearly 170 victims of the attack and are also scrutinizing the technical evidence such as media and social media footage,” he further said.
