The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai organized a Buddhist tourist group comprising 90 Buddhists from the state of Maharashtra in India to visit Sri Lanka.

This is the first group of Buddhists from India visiting Sri Lanka under the Buddhist trail promotion efforts undertaken by the Mission.

The group arrived in Colombo on May 12 and is expected to visit holy Buddhist sites in Anuradhapura, Kandy, Kataragama, etc.

The group is headed by Ven. Naluwela Ananda Maha Thera, Chief Incumbent of Maha Mahinda Vihar in Ulhasnagar, Mumbai.

More than 6.5 million Buddhists reside in the Maharashtra state which represents 77 percent of the total the Buddhist population in India. There are more than 52 heritage Buddhist sites in Maharashtra acknowledged by the Archaeological Survey of India. These sites comprise 60 to 100 caves which include the Ajanta and Ellora caves.

The Sri Lankan Mission has been actively promoting Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka among the Maharashtrian Buddhists to create new stream of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka.
