May 9 violence: Over 840 complaints received so far

The Police had received four new complaints on Sunday regarding the incidents related to the violence that spread throughout the country on May 9 adding up to 848 complaints in total so far. Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that 91 suspects had been arrested on Sunday and 64 of them had been released on bail after being produced in court. He said that 42 of the suspects that were arrested were ordered to be remanded. Accordingly, he said that so far, 1,591 suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the May 9 violence.

“From this number 813 suspects have been released on bail and 719 have been remanded. The CID is continuing the investigations regarding the violence at Galle Face Green and Temple Trees and also 25 suspects have been arrested so far over the killing of MP Amarakeerthi Athukorale and his security officer.”

He also said that the Police are also conducting investigations regarding persons who used social media to instigate violence in various areas.

He said the Police had identified such social media sites and their administrators who were engaged in spreading violence and instigating people to commit or join in committing such violence.

Three persons were arrested recently and two more were arrested over the weekend. “One of the suspects is a 42-year-old resident of Sinharamulla, Kelaniya and is working in a private power company and another suspect 27-year-old resident of Kadugannaway working as a cashier in a hotel. They were both produced before the Police and legal action would be taken against them under the computer crimes act.”

The Police Spokesman said that further investigations are ongoing.
