The country is facing an unfortunate situation today as it has been ruled by politicians who had no proper knowledge about the history of the country, said Veddha Chief Wanaspathi Uruwarige Wannilaaththo.

The country which was once called the ‘Granary of the East’ has been converted into a ‘refugee’ camp today. All the governments that had come into power since 1948 are responsible for this situation, he said.

History is the study of who we are and where we came from which can potentially reveal where we are headed, the Veddha Chief said when he met the members of the Gokarella Elders’ Society who visited him in Dambana recently.

Wannilaaththo further said that history is important to study because it is essential for understanding ourselves and the world around us The younger generation should read the history of our exemplary and heroic ancestors and try to mould their own characters too accordingly, he added.

Members of the Gokarella Elders’ Society handed over several gift parcels including arecanut, betel, biscuits and sweetmeats to the Veddha Chief. He was happy to receive the gifts and as a sign of gratitude asked some of his men to perform their traditional dance Kiri Koraha for his visitors.
