Eight thousand metric tonnes of compost manure and 142,000 litres of liquid organic manure have been produced by a government-sponsored venture located at Hathareskotuwa, Hingurakgoda, for the Maha season.

According to P.B. Nagollegedara of the fertilizer factory, 416,000 litres of liquid organic manure had been distributed among farmers in the Polonnaruwa district last Yala season.

It has been planned to distribute both compost manure and liquid organic manure among farmers in Medirigiriya, Polonnaruwa New Town and Hingurakgoda areas this season,” said Nagollegedara.

He said that there is a high demand for their fertilizer which they are unable to meet. He added that if there were more investors in such a trade, a large sum of money flowing out of the country could be saved while the food product would be toxic-free for our future generations. Nagollegedara also said that provided that this manure could be made available to farmers across the country, the food produced would have a high demand in the international market as well.

He said organic fertilizer was a good venture for the younger generation to engage in. Young unemployed graduates could take to such a business individually or as a group and become entrepreneurs. Nagollegedara said that if the younger generation including the graduates commence such a trade, it would be a gesture of gratitude to their motherland for the free education that it gave them.
