‘Rajarata farmers entrusted with burden of feeding the nation’

The Rajarata farmer community is required to shoulder the major portion of the burden of producing food for the whole nation in a bid to face the impending food crisis that would affect the entire country, said Anuradhapura Additional Government Agent Sandhya Abeseykara yesterday.

She was speaking at the inauguration of a public awareness programme for educating people in the Anuradhapura district on food security, under the guidance of Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara.

This programme is a joint effort of the Anuradhapura District Secretariat Agriculture Department, Agrarian Development Department and Samurdhi Development Department. The Government Agent told the Daily News that it would be implemented in all 22 Divisional Secretariat divisions in the District.

At the inauguration, people were educated mainly on continuous cultivation, post-harvest techniques, thrifty usage of food, usage of fertilizer and manufacturing of compost.

“The country faces a possible food crisis as the ultimate result of a range of political, social and economic issues,” said GA Jayasundara. “There is no other alternative solution than to grow essential food crops at the home garden, village, divisional secretariat, district, provincial and national level as soon as possible.”

Additional Government Agent Abeysekara stressed that the Rajarata farmer community was required to shoulder the major portion of the burden of producing food for the whole nation since they are the proud heirs of the tank culture in Wew Bendhi Rajjayaya.

Also, we shall practice depending on each other and one another to thwart the current challenges, she said.
