Paper scarcity to affect text book printing

It is reported that text book printing of the Education Publications Department is likely to be affected by the scarcity of blank paper and the increased paper prices. When the Daily News inquired into the issue, it was reported that the price of paper has almost doubled and nevertheless there is a huge scarcity of paper in the open market these days. Nearly almost all papers needed for use in the country are imported and therefore the present foreign exchange shortage has severely affected paper imports today.

“Anyhow the Educational Publications Department is taking every possible measure to mitigate the issue,” EPD sources said.

However, the Education Ministry is looking forward to providing students with textbooks on time amidst the scarcity of paper.

No papers are manufactured in the country as the main paper manufacturing mills situated in Embilipitiya and Valachchenai have been in dilapidated condition for over a certain period of time.
