A strong leader is one who can influence and inspire others to strive for excellence. Perfect Prefect features Head Girl, Southlands College, Galle, Tharushi Kasturige, who has a never say die attitude.

There is a saying that actions speak louder than words. If you want to be an effective leader, you need to walk the talk. That is the hallmark of a great leader. When the time comes, he or she must be ready to act. He or she needs to deliver on his/her promise. There is a saying – ‘Actions prove who someone is, words just prove who they want to be’. Even good intentions that are not followed by actions, are in the end empty words.

“I would like to make a difference by letting my actions speak for me. I always try to get everything done with teamwork and unity. I always try my best to encourage everyone to be the best versions of themselves, rather than competing with each other,” said Kasturige.

She is a person who welcomes new challenges and new opportunities. She knows that this will increase her skills set. We all know the famous quote – ‘IMPOSSSIBLE only means – I’m Possible’

“The hardships that I face, the tough competition in the education system, the resistance and all the negativity that follows when you are engaged in some important work, and all the issues one has to face when you do something beyond ordinary makes me passionate,” explained Kasturige.

Believe in yourself

The world can be an unforgiving place. It is a ruthless place. This is why you need to believe in yourself. You need to believe in yourself, even though people may say you are not good enough.

“Anyone of you, who’s willing to be a leader, just know that all you need is to believe in yourself. We all have a leader in us. All you need do, is find that leader within you. For those of you who are leaving school to face the real world (same as me), it may take a little time to fit in. Always make sure to discover your own potential, this will take you down a path which will lead to success.”

For Kasturige the ability to inspire others is absolutely necessary when you take on a leadership position. Exerting authority without the ability to influence feelings of devotion and love in one’s followers or team members, will not give you results you can be satisfied with.

“True, anyone can be a leader, but not everyone can be a great leader. In my opinion this world needs leaders who have the potential to influence, not just exert authority. I think the power to influence is all that matters in the end. I think the world needs good influencers,” added Kasturige.

Her attitude is – ‘never say die’. Her work ethic is professionalism. She has succeeded in life due to a number of reasons. It is a combination of factors such as: a supportive family, supportive teachers, friends, determination, dedication, talent and taking right decisions at the right time.

Medicine is her chosen field. Entering Oxford University is her goal and one of her dreams.

Thirst for knowledge

“My ambition is to be a professor in medicine. At the moment I am waiting for my A/Level results. I hope they turn out the way I expect, and if so I can continue my studies as planned. I hope to continue my studies until a PhD. I have a dream to enter the Oxford University, at least after a first local degree,” said Kasturige.

She is a young lady with so many outside interests. She has a great thirst for knowledge, reading up on a variety of subjects, some of them heavy reading for serious study.

“Well, I have a lot of outside interests. Learning more about Buddhism, Psychology, Law, World History and Astronomy are some of them. Reading books, playing the piano, swimming are my favourite pastime,” she said.

Being a Buddhist, she admires the Buddha, who had such wonderful insights into life. His service to the people during his time and to future generations is tremendous. Though the Princess of Wales and Winston Churchill may pale in comparison to the Buddha, there is no doubt that they too changed so many lives through their efforts.

“Being a Buddhist, I greatly admire the Buddha and I consider him a very great leader. There is so much to learn from the Buddha. He had such great qualities of leadership. I also very much admire Diana, the Princess of Wales. She showed us the magic that love and kindness can do. I also admire Winston Churchill for his remarkable ability of guiding a country through wartime and for his “we shall not surrender attitude,” pointed out Kasturige.

Her biggest inspiration in life is her parents. “My father always made me see the world in a unique way and it is he who taught me to be the person I am today. His knowledge, attitude, compassion was always an inspiration to me. My mother always encouraged me to be the best version of myself every day. Their supportiveness and their trust have inspired me every single day of my life and it is my biggest goal to make them proud.”

In this journey in life, she once more points out that it is so important to believe in yourself, never give up and always cherish your loved ones.

“I would like to add that in your journey to success make sure that you work hard and believe in yourself. Make sure that you make your loved ones happy and proud along with your success. Just make sure that you are a good human being, and do that to the best of your ability. Finally, trust yourself, never give up and keep going!” said Kasturige.
