Police raid illicit liquor breweries

Pansiyagama Police are on the trail of manufacturers of illicit liquor as several social and religious organizations in the area had requested the police to take action to eradicate the illicit liquor menace that has become a great threat to society, especially to low-income families.

In the early hours on Friday (15) the Police raided a spot 15 kilometres away from the town and 93,750 millilitres of illicit brew, goda, utensils used for the manufacture and a lorry were taken into custody along with a suspect.

The suspect had planned to transport this stock of liquor to the Gokarella area in a lorry.

Police officers had to conduct these raids using bicycles as they were unable to use the jeep or motorcycles due to the fuel crise.

On the same day, the police raided another spot 10 kilometres away from Pansiyagama town and 2,040 millilitres of beer and 22,1875 millilitres of arrack were taken into custody together with a suspect. According to the police, the suspect had hoarded this stock of liquor with the hope of selling it at exorbitant prices.
