Poojani Dinethsa Ratnayake the swimming, karate and gymnastic star

Sixteen year old All Island Swimming Champion, Gold Medalist in Kumite and Kata and Gymnast Poojani Dinethsa Ratnayake has brought honour and immense glory to her alma mater Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya Kiribathgoda with her deeds in the field of sports.

Poojani who hails from Devalapola, Minuwangoda was born on April 23 2005 and she was admitted to Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya Kiribathgoda in 2011 When she was in grade two she participated in Gymnastics at the school inter house tournament and won her events and participating in the Gampaha District Tournament she won a Bronze in Horse Event and for three successive years she did Horse Event and won places.

Then in 2014 she took up to Karate and joined the Young Dragon Shotokan Karate Club Kadawatha and participating in the under ten age group she came third in the Beam Event at Gampaha District Tournament and in 2016 taking part in the under Eleven age category at the Sunakoshi Shotokan Cup Championship she won a Gold Medal for Kata and Silver for Kumite and in the same year at the All Island Tenshinkan Championship she won another Gold for Kata and Silver for Kumite and in 2017 at the International Karate Championship 2017 at the under 12 age group she won a Silver in Kata and a Bronze for Kumite. She participated in the School Inter House Athletic Meets and did High Jump, Javelin and Putt Shot and won in the under Eleven High Jump and she came first and won the second and third places in Putt Shot and Javelin respectively .

Her parents R.M.G.Fonseka and Dilani Sulochana Jayarathne noticing that her forte is Swimming handed her over to Swimming Club Kadawatha and she came under Mr.Pradeep and her first attempt was in the same year at the 2013 Inter House Medley Relay Free Style 25 metres and her team got the third place and in 2014 at the Gampaha District Meet she participated in the 25 meter Free Style event and the Inter School District Meet she came second in 25 metre Free Style and in the relays Free style and Medley her team won the second place and at the 2015 District Meet she won 25 metre Free and Medly and in the same year at the meet organized by Three Kings Kadawatha she won the 25 Free style Back stroke and Butterfly and Relay and she was the under ten champion.

Then in year 2016 she participated in five meets and at the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Championship she got the qualifying time and at the Western Province WISS Meet under 14 Free and Breast Stroke first and Butterfly third and at the Penthalon Meet she qualified and at the Regent College Meet her team set a new record in 50 metre Medley and in 2017 she participated in four meets and in the Three Kings she came first in Free Style 50 metres under 14 event and at the other meet she won the Breast Stroke, Back Stroke, Butterfly and she was the Champion and at the District Swimming Association Meet she won the 50 metre Back, Butterfly Stroke, Free and she was the under 13 Champion.In 2017 participating at the Inter House Meet under 14 Aerobic Gymnastics individual under 14 she was second and in Trio too she was second and in 2018 at the Inter House Meet Trio Event she was third

Then in 2018 she was the schools under 15 Champion by winning 50 metres Breast stroke, Butterfly and Free Style and at the Western Province School Games Colours Awards held in 2018 and 2019 at Royal College Colombo she received Merit certificates and in the year 2019 she had a tight schedule with ten meets and at the Junior Nationals she was third in 100 Breast Stroke and 50 Butterfly second and at the Inter District National Open Meet she won places in Butterfly, 50x4 Relay and 50x4 Medley and at the National Sports Festival All Island Open Meet she came third in 50 Fly and she was the under 16 Champion.
