The Government has extended an invitation to all political parties and groups in Parliament to join in forming an All-party Government, a senior official said.
He said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has told this to political leaders who participated at the swearing-in ceremony along with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana in Parliament last week.
“Prime Minister Gunawardena and a few other party leaders will co-ordinate the discussion with parties and groups in Parliament,” the official said, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, addressing parliament following his election as the Eighth Executive President of Sri Lanka, requested all Parties to join hands and unite to implement a new system as the period of division was now over.
President Wickremesinghe extended a special invitation to his rival candidates, Dullas Alahapperuma, Anura Dissanayake, the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena and the all other Parties including the TNA and other Tamil political parties.
Addressing Parliament following the announcement of the results of the race for presidency, Wickremesinghe said the public does not want old politics and therefore Parliament must unite and work towards specific goals to ensure the country’s way forward.
Wickremesinghe said that it is a well-known fact that the country is facing great difficulties, and the country’s youth are demanding for a change in the system.
Hence, he called upon all Parliamentarians to put aside their political differences and unite to get the country through this difficult period.
Meanwhile, a special meeting of the government is expected to be held on Tuesday (26) afternoon under President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
This is the first time that the group of ruling party MPs will meet after Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed the office of President.
According to government sources, there will be discussions about the adoption of the Emergency Law and the formation of an All Party Government.
According to the Constitution the total number of Ministers in the Cabinet shall not exceed thirty; and Ministers who are not members of the Cabinet and Deputy Ministers shall not, in the aggregate exceed forty.
Where the recognized political party or the independent group which obtains the highest number of seats in Parliament forms a National Government, the number of Ministers in Cabinet, the number of Ministers who are not in Cabinet and the number of Deputy Ministers shall be determined by Parliament.
