Bad weather: 13,739 people in 10 districts affected, five deaths reported

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated that 13,739 people belonging to 3,471 families in 10 districts have been affected by the incelement weather conditions prevailing in the country over the last few days.

Director (Information) DMC, Sugath Dissanayake made this observation at a press conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday (05). Dissanayake also pointed out that 574 people belonging to 137 families are currently relocated at safety centers and said that 5 people have lost their lives. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department yesterday (05) stated that the heavy rains experienced in the South-Wwestern part of the island will gradually decrease.

“Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and the Galle and Matara Districts will experience rain from time to time. In some places in the Sabaragamuwa Province, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts heavy rains are expected,” the Department states. The Northern, North-Central and North-Western Provinces will experience several spells of rain.

“In the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western Provinces, the wind speed will be at times 50 kmph,” the weather forecast said. The Meteorological Department also issued an advisory for strong winds and rough seas for the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. “Wind speeds can increase up to (50-60) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Kankesanturai and Trincomalee. These sea areas will be rough at times. There is a possibility to increase swell waves (about 2.5 –3.5 m) in the coastal areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Therefore, it is advised not to venture for fishing and naval activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota during the next 24 hours,” the advisory said.
