The Railways Department will resume the train services in the upcountry railway line from tomorrow after it was temporarily stopped due to the landslides and rock falls caused by the bad weather condition.

This was revealed at a meeting presided by Transport and Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunewardena at the Nawalapitiya Railway station yesterday.

MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Railways General Manager and other officials of the department too were present.

This discussion was held to explore the possibility of resuming the movement of the upcountry railway services which are currently at a standstill.

The railway workers said that there have been many landslides and rockfalls at several places on the railway line from Nawalapitiya to Nanu-Oya and the restoration work is in the final stage.

Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the railway department should be made into a profitable institution and through that a background should be created where the department itself earns the necessary money for salaries, overtime allowances and operational activities.
