Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena expressed disappointment over certain Parliamentarian’s outburst in Parliament blurting out anything that comes to their mind. “I entered this august assembly 33 years ago in 1989 as a public representative and I am extremely disappointed at the manner in which certain members of parliament blurt out anything that comes to their mind.”
“As the Cabinet Spokesman, I responded to a question posed by a journalist who claimed that these days there is a hunt going on that the government is trying to suppress the protesters. I responded by saying that there is no such oppression and that the President had clearly stated that people have the right to peaceful protests. However, if there is violence and the rights of others are violated, then the law would be enforced against those who engage in such violence and violate the rights of others.” Dr. Gunawardena noted that he had clearly stated that “For the first time in the history of the world, a member of parliament, where the legislature makes laws, was inhumanely killed on the streets after inflicting much suffering upon him and his security officer, even forbidding the removal of his body. I said this incident tarnished the image of our country and added a black mark.”
