Wesley, Joes to play for pride in Rugby Super Round

St. Joseph’s College and Wesley College will look to play for pride when they clash in the Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament, last Super Round encounter at Havelock Park today. Both teams ruined their chances of winning their maiden ‘A’ Division League title after losing their opening fixtures of the Super Round stage played last week.

The Wesleyites, after showing early promise suffered a 16-21 defeat at the hands of the defending champions Royal College at Longden Place while the Josephians were beaten by the former champions Isipathana 13-16 in a close encounter at Havelock Park.

Now, both teams are in with a great chance of redeeming some of their lost prestige and to conclude the league phase of this shortened 12-team tournament with a consolation victory.

Even then, there is more than prestige and pride in this fixture as the third and fourth places of the league will also determine whom they will be pitted against when the quarter-final draw for the President’s Trophy Knock-Out Tournament takes place later this month.

St. Joseph’s will start the game with a slight advantage as they are currently in third place of the Super Round points table with a tally of 24 points from their six outings while Wesley are trailing with a total of 22 points from their six matches.

However, Wesley will have a phycological advantage going into the game as they were able to record a thrilling 15-13 victory against St. Joseph’s at Longden Place when the two teams played for the last time in the 2019 season.
