Sports Minister promises to uplift wrestling sport

The Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe is expected to get foreign coach service to upgrade Sri Lankan wrestling and arrangements are already being made to uplift this sport.

The minister had a successful discussion with Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation President Sarath Hewawitharana and the other top officials of the Federation, Commonwealth Games bronze medal wrestler Nethmi Ahinsa Poruthotage and her coach Suranga Kumara at the Sports Ministry recently. The minister also agreed to give level 2 foreign coach for the Sri Lankan wrestling to upgrade international level 2 qualifying standard.

The Minister also said importance of the nutritious foods for the wrestlers while Wrestling President and the Nethmi's coach pointed out this medal winner got nutrition from seeds for the breakfast, jack fruit and eggs with a nutritious meal for the lunch (low rice and more fresh vegetables) and soup for the dinner and in addition Nethmi didn't drink milk powder, instead she eats almonds.

The Minister also made instructions to get more almonds for the athletes. The athletes' nutrition is more important to reach success, said Sports Minister.

Athletes discipline can develop through sports while during the school days students should involve with sports and this is very good for the students to develop their personality. They learn how to face win and loss in the society while physical exercises are important for the students, added Sports Minister.

Nethmi the bronze medal wrestler and her coach came to the Ministry with their own expenses but the Minister pointed out a wrestler like Nethmi is country's asset and she already brought honour to the country. That's why Sports Ministry has make arrangements to give transport facilities for this type of athletes and Minister have instructed the Sports Ministry Secretary Dr Amal Harsha de Silva to look into this type of matters.

Nethmi's coach Suranga Kumara said; next time we can get Olympic medal from wrestling and expected more support to reach this target. The sports Ministry Secretary Dr Amal Harsha de Silva, Wrestling President Sarath Hewawirharana and other officials of the Federation also graced this occasion.
