President will inform House before IMF agreement is finalised - Speaker

The Speaker informed Parliament yesterday (22) that the President will brief the Cabinet and the House on the International Monetary Fund staff level agreement prior to its finalisation.

Thus, once the amendments and additions are done to the agreement, the Cabinet, the House and the Opposition will accordingly be informed about it, the Speaker noted.

Speaker also noted, “The President told me that discussions should be held with creditors and relevant countries before arriving at a final agreement with the IMF. Reports of these discussions are added to the agreement before it is presented to the IMF board for approval.”

The Speaker also said that the Cabinet or any state official have been informed about the Agreement content as of yet.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella noted that the Agreement should be presented to the House before it is given approval by the Cabinet.
