Three wheel driver arrested over student’s knock down

A three wheeler driver was arrested on Tuesday for injuring a school student, who was crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing, and then abandoning him on the roadside, Ginigathhena Police OIC Viraj Withanage said.

The student in Grade 5 of the Ginigathhena Primary School was returning home after a tuition class. He was hit by a three-wheeler, which was heading to Yatiyantota from Hatton.

The three-wheeler driver had taken in the injured student following the accident to take him to the hospital, but had abandoned him mid-way. He had given Rs.500 to the child asking him to obtain treatment.

The residents, who saw the injured child, had admitted him to the Ginigathhena hospital. He was transferred to Nawalapitiya District Hospital.

The Police arrested the offending three-wheeler driver and took his three-wheeler to police custody after perusing the CCTV footage. The suspect was to be produced before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court.
