‘Our land is our Strength’ in Batti

An awareness meeting under the theme ‘Our Land is Our Strength,’ was held at the Co-op hall, Station Road, Batticaloa yesterday (28) to encourage the cultivation of secondary and subsidiary crops and home gardens organised by the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka along with the Batticaloa District Inter-Religious Council presided over by Coordinators R. Manogaran and Abdul Hameed.

Agriculture Instructor Mufeetha Ramesh explained home gardening, preparing beds for planting, transplanting methods, organic manure application, pesticides, fungicides, methods of increasing the yield and fumigation.

The value of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and carbon in vegetation and breaking down vegetable remnants for preventing bacteria were also discussed.

Retired Bank of Ceylon Manager V.Segarajasingam explained the loan facilities for cultivation and growing secondary crops, ways of obtaining these loans, repaying them and claiming compensation for crop failure.
