President leaves for UN Climate Change Summit in Egypt

Climate Change Secretariat to be established in Sri Lanka

President Ranil Wickremesinghe will leave for Egypt early tomorrow (6) morning to participate in the United Nations COP 27 World Conference on Climate Change which will be held in Sharm-El-Shiek, Egypt from tomorrow (6) until the 18th.

The President is due to address the conference on November 7 and 8.

President Wickremesinghe is expected to express his views on the Climate Change Secretariat to be established in Sri Lanka as well as on climate change in Sri Lanka and around the world during his speech.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe will meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sissi and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly during his four-day visit. The President will return to the country on November 10.

About 90 heads of state have confirmed their participation for this year’s conference and representatives from 190 countries are expected to participate. Presidential Senior Advisor on Climate Change Ruwan Wijewardene, President’s International Affairs Director Dinuk Colombage and President’s Private Secretary Sandra Perera will accompany the President on this visit.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to establish an international university on climate change in Sri Lanka and draft a bill in the future to deal with climate change and get it passed in Parliament.

Former president and current Speaker of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed and Eric Solheim, the executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme and former Norwegian environment minister, who were appointed as climate change advisors to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, are currently supporting the work of the Climate Change Secretariat to be established.
