The Computer Crimes Division of Sri Lanka Police yesterday said that an activist of the struggle (Aragalaya) was arrested in Maharagama for posting comment on Facebook that would create public unrest.
This person who had posted comments on the Facebook stated: “Are you also an invited guest at the 75th Independence Day celebrations ? If so, come prepared to be dunked in the Beira Lake amidst applauds from the public.”
According to the police, the suspect was arrested during an investigation based on a complaint that a certain individual had posted various comments on Facebook in an attempt to incite the public in conjunction with the Independence Day ceremony.
It was revealed during investigations conducted by the Computer Crime Division that the suspect had prepared and included in his Facebook various comments (posts) that would cause public
disturbance in the above manner.
Accordingly, the police said that after checking the Facebook account of the suspect who expressed such comments and obtaining a detailed report, the suspect was arrested in the Maharagama area.
Police said that this person had been arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens police previously on several charges including entering the President’s House, Fort and forcibly entering the Rupavahini Corporation and has been produced in court and that there are cases pending against him.
The 40-year-old suspect is to be produced before the Nugegoda Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court.
