The Southern Province Tourist Hoteliers Association (SPTHA) expressed serious concern over the existing power cut that badly affected to their industry and requested authorities to provide continuous power supply at least to the entire Southern Tourism Zone especially during this short tourist arrival season for the sake of a large number of small and medium scale tourist hotels, guest houses and tourist villas.
According to SPTHA over 780 small scale tourists hotels and guest houses are currently located between Kalutara, Beruwala, Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda, Bentota and Galle tourism zone and a large number of small foreign tour groups, couples and individuals who are not in a sound financial background express their willingness to stay in their hotels during their short vacations in the country. Speaking to Daily News Business SPTHA, Chairman Nissanka Bandara
said although a large number of tourists from India, Germany, Switzerland and Russia are making inquiries daily to stay in their hotels and guest houses at low cost, the majority are reluctant to stay with us owing to the on- going power cut.
“Our association members who are the owners of hotels and guest houses are not in a position to purchase electric generators like leading hotels located within the zone, “ he said.
Bandara therefore requested authorities to provide continuous power supply at least to the Southern Tourism Zone even only during this peak tourist season or provide them with electric generators on easy payment schemes without charging high interests considering the much needed dollars we bring to our country.
