Buwaneka Gunatilleka and Ranithma Liyanage were adjudged most outstanding shuttlers at the Badminton tournament of the 47th National Sports Festival (NSF)concluded at Sri Lanka Badminton Headquarters, Maitland place on Wednesday.
The two reigning National champions Buwaneka and Ranithma both from Southern Province gave excellent performances at this event while both of them guided Southern Province to the championships in both men’s and women’s.
In the women’s section, Southern Province defeated North Central Province 3-0 in the semi-finals while Western Province won their semi-final against Central Province to enter the final. Southern Province won the final defeating Western Province to take the women’s title while third place was won by North Central Province defeating Central Province. The champion Southern Province team comprised Nadeesha Gayanthi, B.M Dilrukshi, A.H.Masakorala, V.S Vidhanange, M.S Dhahamsa, S. Umagiliyage, and Ranithma Liyanage.
Meanwhile, the Southern Province men’s team comprising Lahiru Weerasingher, Buwaneka Goonatileka, Lochana de Silva, Chamath Dias, Charith Illeperuma, Hansa de Silva, and Thenuka de Silva emerged champions defeating Western Province 3-1 in the final. Earlier Western beat Uva and Southern beat Central in the semi-finals while Central Province won third place defeating Uva 3-1 in their playoff game.
S. Wijeratne the Director of Sports Ministry was the Chief Guest at the presentation ceremony while Palitha Hettiarachchi and Roshan Gunawardena Senior Vice Presidents of SLB and senior Badminton coach and officer in charge of Badminton at the Sports Ministry Kamal Gamlath graced this tournament which was organized by Sports Ministry and Sports Development Department with the support of SLB.
