Sri Lanka produced another fine performance as they cruised to their second successive victory defeating Bangladesh 3-0 in the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Challenge Cup Women’s Tournament Playoff match played at the Nepal Sports Council (NSC) Indoor Stadium in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu on Thursday.
With this win, Sri Lanka have put themselves in contention for a fifth-place finish in this eight-nation tournament and are set to meet Kyrgyzstan in the decider today at the same venue.
The Sri Lankan Women played some good attacking volleyball consistently and were able to outclass their opponents in straight sets 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 in less than one hour.
Sri Lanka started with their best line-up and managed to stay ahead by a couple of points initially, before they extended the lead to 10-6, at which point Bangladesh opted for a tactical timeout.
That proved to be a vital break for Bangladesh as they enjoyed a successful passage of play with a series of crucial points before reducing the deficit to a solitary point (10-11). However, Sri Lanka survived a few anxious moments and rested the initiative back again as they went into a commanding 20-14 lead before adding the finishing touches 25-16 in 20 minutes.
Both teams looked to take the initiative in the second set with Sri Lanka opening the scoring with back-to-back points before Bangladesh came back strongly to level the scores at 4-4.
Thereafter, Sri Lanka got their act together well and piled up a series of points as they extended the lead to five points (15-10) before cruising to a comprehensive 25-15 win in 20 minutes.
Bangladesh never looked like taking the game into a four-setter as they faltered regularly, and Sri Lanka took advantage to punish their opponents 25-7 in 18 minutes despite fielding a couple of reserve players during the third and final set.
