Fort Magistrate recuses from zoo elephant handing case

Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage informed Court that he would withdraw from hearing the three confiscated

elephants’ case due to personal reasons and that it will be referred to No. 01 Court in Hulftsdorp when the case related to the handing over of three elephants named Kandula, Kanchana and Mangala to the person who pleaded guilty in this elephant fraud case was taken up yesterday (7).

The magistrate said this when the case was called regarding and ordered that the case is recalled for hearing in that Court on July 26.

Special Investigations Unit Director SSP Wickramasinghe informed court that the former Zoo director Anura Silva, and former Wildlife Director General Ratnayake named as a suspects in this case, have filed a petition in the Court of Appeal not to arrest them and said further that instructions have been received from the Attorney General that no action should be taken against these two persons until the verdict is delivered.

On the last court date, Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the Director General of National Zoological Park Department to submit a report regarding the appraised value of the three elephants. Police informed court through a B report that former Zoo Director, Anura Silva and the former Wildlife Director General Ratnayake have made a mistake and that this has been revealed during investigations.
