Gamini Ranasinghe, a member of the ‘Electric and Electronic Industry Development Advisory Committee’ of the Industrial Development Ministry said that a policy regarding electric vehicles will be unveiled together with the Industry Ministry soon.

Accordingly, the electric vehicle policy will be prepared and submitted to Parliament for its approval and made into an Act in the future.

He pointed out that an automobile policy related to Sri Lanka has not been prepared so far. Accordingly it is hoped that the automobile policy will be prepared and the electric vehicle policy will be prepared as a part of it since the automobile policy is being prepared by the Transport Ministry.

After the formulation of the electric vehicle policy, the specifications and relevant criteria and standards for assembly, production and import of electric vehicles will be decided. Besides, the specifications and regulations of electric vehicle charging stations and the methodology will also be included in the policy.

Under this move to formulate the electric vehicle policy, a regulatory authority is also to be established to regulate the entire electric vehicle sector.

Accordingly, the institutions that import, manufacture and provide services for electric vehicles should act according to the EV policy, Ranasinghe said.
