Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said 1,600 students who have completed their medical degrees will leave Medical Colleges at the end of this month.
He said that 660 doctors are abroad for further studies and at least 500 of them are expected to return to Sri Lanka shortly. Accordingly, he said 2,100 doctors will join the Sri Lankan hospital system soon.
He was speaking to the media after an event in Kundasale.Minister Rambukwella also stated that the Cabinet has approved the recruitment of about 3,000 nurses. He emphasised that around 600 University professors and 72 pilots have left the country in the past and thus it is not fair to blame the related problem only on the health sector.
