According to Kiriella Police, burglars broke into a jewellery shop linked to a tourist hotel in Kiriella and stole some of the merchandise.
The Police said that white gold jewellery weighing six pounds and gold jewellery weighing 3.3 pounds worth Rs.1.7 million were among the stolen items.
A stock of navaratna and sapphire gemstones was also among the pilfered articles. According to the police complaint, there were 32 boxes containing navaratna stones and 51 boxes of sapphires.
As of yesterday (20), the number of gems in those boxes had not been determined, and the police have not been informed of their value. The complainant stated that the values cannot be provided until a report from the Colombo head office is obtained, according to a senior police officer.
Police investigations have revealed that the theft took place between November 12 and November 18 and that during this time, this shop was closed.
