Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said in Parliament yesterday (27) that sanitary napkins will be provided to schoolgirls in the future based on the intervention of the Education Ministry.
The Education Minister said this in response to an oral question by Member of Parliament Hesha Withanage.
The Minister said that they are looking forward to starting this project with 300,000 schoolgirls, giving priority to rural areas.
The Minister who commented further said, “I was hoping to make a presentation in this regard on the Budget debate day of the Education Ministry. There are 1.6 million children in primary schools in our country. There are 2.4 million children in the upper classes from Year 5 onwards. About 1.2 of them are girls. Starting from at least with 300,000, we hope to provide these sanitary napkins to the children in the future.”
“We hope to start this project under a CSR project. It is expected to start with 3 lakh children and increase gradually. If sanitation is provided to 10 lakh school girls, all children will be covered. He also said that there is no great need for children in mainstream schools.” he added.
