Anuradhapura Prison inmates engaged in paddy farming.

Anuradhapura Prison Superintendent Mohan Karunaratne said that the Sri Lanka Prisons Department has earned about Rs. 14 million from the food crops cultivated by the inmates of the Anuradhapura Prison in the last year (2023).

Paddy cultivation has been done on an area of about five acres of land in the Anuradhapura Jail’s open-prison camp without using any chemical fertilizers and harvesting has started now.

Annually organic paddy cultivation is done in this way with the help of the inmates and in addition fruits and vegetables are also grown in this open prison camp.

Also, inmates produce bakery products, he said.

Agriculture Consultant of the Prison Department P. S. Wijesiri said the food crops are used for consumption at the Anuradhapura Prison, and the surplus are given to the inmates of other prisons and also sold to the public through the stall in the Anuradhapura prison premises.
