The CID reported to the Anuradhapura Magistrate Courts that the Pistol used by the former Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Sanjeeva Mahanama accused of staging a shooting at a car in which popular actor and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP Uddika Premaratne was travelling had returned his pistol two days after the shooting noting that it was not working properly,

but a subsequent inspection had revealed that the pistol was in a good working condition.

The Court ordered the CID to send the pistol belonging to the Sri Lanka Police Department used by Sanjeeva Mahanama and the bullet casings found at the scene of the shooting to the government analyst and submit the related report to the Court at the earliest.

The Court ordered the CID to find out whether the official duty weapon used by the ASP had been used in the relevant shooting and to submit a report showing the progress of the investigation to the Court.

It is revealed that the suspect ASP has gone to Malaysia and an investigation is being conducted into charges of travelling abroad without proper permission of the police and the improper handing over the duty firearm to the Police.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa said recently that accordingly the IGP will take legal action against him in the future. On September 17, 2023, a group of unidentified gunmen had opened fire at MP Premaratne’s car when he returned home in Anuradhapura, at around 10:35 p.m.
