Hirunika’s abduction case judgement on June 28

The case filed against former UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra for alleged involvement in the abduction of a youth was fixed for judgement on June 28 by the Colombo High Court.

When the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja, Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara appearing on behalf of the Attorney General and attorney Ashan Fernando appearing for the defence made lengthy submissions over the case.

After considering the circumstances, the case was fixed for deliver its judgement on June 28 by the Colombo High Court Judge.

At a previous occasion, except Hirunika Premachandra, eight other accused who pleaded guilty for their involvement in the abduction had been given a suspended prison sentence by the Colombo High Court.

The accused Kelum Niranjana, Kasun Malinda, Ruwan Pushpakumara, Mohammed Rizwan, Pasindu Sanjeewa, P.S.Abeysiriwardena, Sanjeewa Kumara and Jeganadacal pleaded guilty to seven charges including abduction, aiding and abetting to abduction and unlawful assembly. Apart from the abduction charges, the nine accused have been charged on 29 counts by the Attorney General including threatening, assaulting and intimidating the victim Amila Priyanga after abducting him in Dematagoda.

The accused who were indicted are; Hirunika Premachandra, Kelum Niranjana, Kasun Malinda, Ruwan Pushpakumara, Mohammed Rizwan, Pasindu Sanjeewa, P.S.Abeysiriwardena, Sanjeewa Kumara and Jeganadacal. The complainant Amila Priyankara alleged that he was abducted and assaulted by a group of people who came in a black Defender jeep to Dematagoda on December 21, 2015.
