The Education Ministry in collaboration with Sri Lanka CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team) has organised a cyber security programme aimed at educating school students and teachers on the safe use of social media platforms.

This is in response to the daily reports of various cyber crimes and incidents related to social media.

Due to the lack of awareness and negligence regarding the safe use of social media and the internet, many schoolchildren have fallen victim to cyber criminals on numerous occasions.

This initiative seeks to address this issue by raising awareness and providing comprehensive knowledge on cyber crimes and how to stay protected from such threats.

The programme involves training groups including Information Technology teachers and senior school students at zonal and provincial levels. Through these trained groups, the programme aims to disseminate information about various cyber crimes and provide in-depth understanding and knowledge on protecting oneself from these crimes.

A Sri Lanka CERT spokesperson sharing insights with the Daily News stated that this initiative is designed to inform and educate about the different types of cyber crimes and the best practices to stay safe online.
