School rugby in full swing in Kandy

Over here in Kandy, rugby like many sports has a rich history and the first school game was played over here. And from that day the game has been popular. This game has connected people and communities.

Trinity College led by Anuhas Kodithuwaku, were at one time was the powerhouse of school rugby. Started the season with a win over S. Thomas’ College by 31-8 at Pallekelle grounds and won the Canon R.S de Saram Shield, and in the second game went down to D.S. Senanyake College 10-14 for the first time.

This week they will be playing their home town school Wariyapola Sri Suamngala College led by Dinidu Wickreamsinhghe on June 30 Sunday at Bogambara Stadium, which should be a good game. Sri Sumangala College in the first game went down to Isipathana College and in the second game to Dharmaraja College are trying their best to produce a good game of run and pass rugby.

St.Anthony’s College – who took up the oval ball game in the 1950’s are led by Oshan Gunaratne lost both their games against Science College and S. Thomas College 17-24 are to scrum down with D.S. Senanayake College on June 28 Friday at Havelock Park, The Kandy school should come out with a good performance. Antonians are blessed with a good side and are sure to give their best in this game.

Dharmaraja College – led by Nimsha Perris — went down to D.S. Senanayake 12 -44 in the first game of the season and won the second game against Sri Sumangala College 32 -12 will play Isipthana College on June 29 Saturday at Havelock Park, are all-out to play well.

Kingswood College led by Anuda Upek lost their first two games to Royal College (5-60) and St. Peters College (3-46) will play their home town school Vidyartha College led by Gayan Perera on June 28 Friday at Bogambara Stadium which should be a close game. Vidyartha College started well by beating St. Joseph’s College 22-27 and lost the second game to Royal College.10-25

St. Sylvester’s College who went down to Ananda College in the first game will play Piliyandala Central College on June 29 Saturday at Bogambara Stadium, which should be a good game and their captain S.M.A.D.B. Samarasekera is sure to lead the side from the front.
