HR manager gets seven years’ RI, Rs.750,000 fine for embrace, kiss

The Court of Appeal on Monday (24) sentenced a Human Resources Manager of a company on a seven-year Rigorous Imprisonment for committing the offence of sexual harassment to a female clerk who worked under him by embracing her and kissing her in 2011.

He was sentenced on three counts on an appeal filed by the victim and was ordered to pay her a compensation of Rs.750,000 and Rs.75,000 as fine to the state.

The victim had filed the appeal in the Court of Appeal after the Trincomalee High Court Judge acquitted the accused in 2015 giving the benefit of the doubt in favour of the accused.

The sentence was ordered by Justices Sampath B.Abayakoon and P.Kumararatnam.

President’s Counsel Anil Silva with Amaan Bandara appeared for the victim employee while President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratna with Nayana Dissanayake, Avishka Jayawardana, Natasha de Alwis, Bandula Dissanayake, Ishan Gampolage and Ramith Dunusinghe appeared for the accused. Deputy Solicitor General Suharshie Herath Jayaweera appeared for the Attorney General.
