The Education Ministry is going to establish a new National University for Education, especially teacher training. The Cabinet has approved the project proposal submitted by the Education Ministry to establish the new National University for education. The draft Bill for that purpose is being studied by the Legal Draftsman and the necessary work is being done to approve it. After receiving the Attorney General’s (AG) clearance, the Bill will be submitted to the Parliament and after approval; all necessary arrangements have been made to establish the new National University for Education.

Pass outs from this university as Bachelor of Education (BEd) graduates (depending on subjects) will be absorbed to the teaching service of the school system after 2028.

There are 19 National Colleges of Education, which were established in 1986 currently operating in the country. The trainees admitted to these colleges are appointed to teach various subjects in grades 1 to 11 in the Sri Lanka teaching service after receiving 3 year training as qualified teachers.

A need for a separate national university for education has arisen to streamline the teaching process. Therefore, the government has already taken a principled decision to merge these 19 National Colleges of Education and start them as a National University for Education.
