“Children should be taught what saving and investing are from early years”

In order to develop the progress of the Colombo Stock Market, the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis paid attention towards the actions that the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka can take.

Attention was drawn to the said when the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis met in Parliament recently (19) under the Chairmanship of the Member of Parliament Hon. Gamini Waleboda.

Addressing the officials present, the Committee Chair, the Member of Parliament Hon. Gamini Waleboda pointed out that it is very important to identify the areas that have a greater impact on the country’s global production and prepare a strategic plan in such a way that they contribute more to the country’s economy.

The officials present also pointed out that children should be taught what saving and investing are from an early schooling age. Moreover, the officials mentioned that imparting knowledge regarding investing in the stock market is very important and currently a large number of adults in this country only resort to saving money traditionally and they have no understanding of the stock market. Due to the said, the officials further stated that the inclusion of an education on investment in to the school syllabus from the 6th grade is already underway.

The Committee pointed out that more attention should be paid to the creation of entrepreneurs and instructed the officials to organize awareness programs in this regard to cover all the districts of the island.

Furthermore, the Committee inquired from the officials regarding the number of investors who are currently connected with the stock market investments and the officials pointed out that there are about 850000 accounts to connect with investments and about 200000 accounts are active.

Members of Parliament Hon. Wasantha Yapabandara and Hon. (Mrs.) Manjula Dissanayake, were present at the Committee meeting held.
