The owners of gold items and jewellery amounting to 42 pounds from Sangathane area, Chavakachcheri, Jaffna, have lost them after they have thrown the valuables by mistake to the Municipal Council garbage truck.
Due to robberies having been increased in and around Jaffna these days, a woman has put all the gold items at home inside a plastic bottle for extra safety precaution and has kept it in another place inside the house to avoid robbery. Her husband who was not aware of the gold items being transferred into a plastic bottle from its original place while cleaning the house has found it and has handed over the plastic bottle containing the valuable gold items together with their garbage bag to the garbage truck of the Municipal Council.
After hearing about the incident, the woman of the house was alarmed and has informed her husband about it and the husband has immediately gone to the Chavakachcheri Police station and lodged a complaint about it.
Police said that the couple who owned the gold have also informed the Chavakachcheri Municipal Council about the incident in order to find them.
Later, a team of Police officers have visited the garbage dump after receiving the complaint and searched for the bottle containing the gold items but were not able to find them. As the news spread throughout the area, many residents had started digging and stirring up the garbage heap of the municipality.
A similar incident was reported from the Chavakachcheri area in Jaffna last year too, where the Municipal Council employees had found 18 pounds of gold which had been thrown into the Municipality’s garbage truck by the owner of the house and had brought them to the house and handed over to the owner.
